Paris is seeing a decline in travel demand compared to last year during the Summer Olympics. Hotel bookings are 39% lower year-over-year. A possible reason for this is that travelers are avoiding the city hosting a global event, expecting higher prices and crowds. International travelers are choosing other destinations in France, including Nanterre, Courbevoie, and Lille, which have seen a massive surge in hotel bookings.

Germany Gains Big

In Europe, Germany is experiencing a surge in demand this summer, with a 50% rise in year-over-year (y-o-y) hotel bookings, followed by Poland at 36%. Other countries experiencing significant growth in travel bookings include Luxembourg, Hungary, and Belgium.

Munich is seeing the highest surge in demand this year. Unlike Paris, the host city of the Summer Olympics, Munich, as the host of the UEFA Euro 2024 soccer tournament, is experiencing a spillover effect. The city is witnessing growth in tourism after the popular sporting event. Visitors are also using Munich as a base to travel to cooler and less crowded destinations in Europe to avoid rising temperatures and a scarcity of rooms. Similarly, travelers to France are choosing Nice as a travel destination.

The Rise of Offbeat Locations

Most of the travel demand for Munich comes from Europe. Travelers from the UK, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Spain, and Belgium are flocking to Germany.

In Asia, Uzbekistan is emerging as a popular summer travel destination this year. Apart from its largest source market, Russia, Uzbekistan is also seeing a rise in bookings from the UAE, the U.S., Spain, and India.
